Recently i've been in the jpop and kpop scene. So most of the music that or is on my listen list is prolly not in english.

Utada Hikaru - Deep River [Album]

Released June 19th, 2002

hot damn... this album is krazy! even though i dont understand like 5% of what she says, its still dope. The only thing that i dont like about this album is the cover. Oh man is it crappy. It's one of the bad pictures of Hikki. They shoulda gone wit something that looks like the cover of Traveling or Sakura Drops. DAMNED PHOTOGRAPHERS.

traveling

sakura drops

[Sakura Doroppusu (drops)] starts off with a little drum roll then progresses into a new age kinda sound. The chorus is very catchy and the video complements it cuz its off da hook. Sakura drops is one of her best looking videos. i prolly played this video 10+ times in the last week cuz it was soo bootiful. Did i mention that she looks hott in it too =D. Worthy of downloading.

[Traveling] is probably one of the more outstanding tracks in the album. It has a techy upbeat sound to it that can only be described by watching her video. Its oh so... colorful.

[Shiawase Ni Narou] starts with a super slow piano/vocal intro. I want to emphasize on SLOW, cuz it'll probably throw listeners off as another song similar to "Final Distance". The little piano 'trills' at the beginning also make this song very neat. (Trills are quick little runs of notes played back and forth) Then a much heavier sound and beat kicks in maybe about 30 seconds into it. There’s nothing really too great about this track, but the feel of it reminds me of her older songs.

[Deep River] This is also a song that starts out slow. The vocals are accompanied by acoustics which makes the song mellow and soothing. Its actually one of my favorite tracks on the CD if not my favorite. Its definately worth being called the title track.

[Letters] Accompanied with Sakura Drops in the single, this song is also one of the better tracks. If you listen to Sakura Drops and Letters, you'd hear a lot of similiarity between the songs. The melody is quick and catchy and its a rather uplifting song.

Poeri Boru [play ball] - The song is not too fast even though the title tells you that it is a basball song. The repeated "I throw you my heart", I guess is trying to use baseball to describe love as if it were a game? Well that's my guess anyway, since I don't exactly know any Japanese. Surprisingly though, the beats are very much like those in "Addicted to You (UP-IN-HEAVEN Mix)" from her previous album.

Tokyo Nights - This song is rather innovative. In this album she shows that she is maturing by trying out new and exciting things. This track is very successful and carries out a great tune.

A.S.A.P. - This song may be the scariest that shes produced. It starts out with some eerie church bells and moves its way onto a fast beat. There are some mad percussions in the song which makes it illmatic.

[Uso Mitai ni I Love You] has sort of a rock style to it. It was awkward when I heard it for the first time cuz of the subtle BUZZES from the electric guitars. Slow vocals...then a jolt of BZZ...then vocals then BAM again. Other then that though, it's a dope song.

[Final Distance] is one of my fav songs out there by hikki. Its sorta old but its still good. When i first heard the song, i thought it was about love or something. When i saw the video i was shocked. It wasn't a slow song about love but rather something about family er something xD. The video is sorta creepy but very innovative. It has a lot of style and uhh.. yea. Its cool :D

Bridge [Interlude] is filled with celtic-sounding violins and drum beats. The beginning and the end of it sounds like heartbeats, so like "ASAP", it sounded eerie and mysterious. I guess if this would have been a full length song, it really wouldn't be Hikki's style at all.

[Hikari], the last song in the album, is another quick paced song. The song has a gap in the beginning which didn't really appeal to me was the only flaw in the song. Everything else is great. This song is also on the "Kingdom Hearts" game and is worth a download. The video on the other hand is VERY DULL. When i say dull i mean dull. It's just Hikki washing six dishes. Oh yea, she also drinks water but that about it. You can't get any more innovative than having a video of an artist washing dishes. I'm tellin myself that the music is making up for the video =D. DAMNED cheap producers.

RATING: 11/10
